The James Shannon Building, also known as Building 1 on the NIH campus, has been a focal point for NIH leadership on campus since its completion in 1938. Building 1 was later dedicated to James Shannon who served as the Director of NIH from 1955-1968, which was a significant period of growth for the institution.Buildings 1-5 and 7 on the Bethesda campus of the NIH about 1947.  Building 6 is out of the photo to the right.  At the top of the photo behind a field is the convent of the Sisters of the Visitation of Washington, now the Mary Woodard Lasker Center for Health Research and Education, and home to our office.
