Dr. Kenneth Olden
May 26, 2004
This is an interview with Dr. Kenneth Olden, Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. The interview is being conducted by Dr. Victoria Harden and Dr. Sara Shostak of the Office of NIH History.
Victoria Harden: Dr. Olden, thank you for speaking with us today. Let us begin at the beginning. You were born in July 1938 in Parrottsville, Tennessee, and I’m looking for background information -- your family, your early education. And, of course, at that time Tennessee was still segregated, and I would like for you to give us some information about growing up in the South as an African American and how you ended up in science.
