Laboratory of Bacterial Products

The Laboratory of Bacterial Products was located in Building 29 on the fourth floor.

Dr. Margaret Pittman was the first female chief of a laboratory at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with the Laboratory of Bacterial Products, beginning in 1957 and continuing until her retirement in 1971.

When the Division of Biologics Standards (DBS) was administratively transferred to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1972, telephone directories suggest that the lab also had space on the first floor in Rooms 120 and 122. The name also changed from Laboratory to Division, reflecting the FDA’s organizational structure.

By the 1980s, the lab was also using Building 29, Room 212. By 1990, they occupied space on the fourth and first floors of Building 29, and a few rooms on the second floor as well.

In the year 2000, the laboratory was called the Division of Bacterial, Parasitic and Allergenic Products.

In addition to Dr. Pittman, Dr. Darrell T. Liu, Dr. John B. Robbins, and Dr. M. Carolyn Hardegree also worked in Bacterial Products.
