GENERAL INFORMATION FOR STETTEN FELLOWS

VI. LONG TERM

A Stetten Fellowship lasts for one year, with the possibility of renewal. But the time will go faster than you think. There are some loose ends that must be cleaned up when the period comes to an end. Even if your Fellowship is renewed, the Annual Report contribution, Stetten Fellow Lecture, and CD-ROM are annual obligations.

1. Annual Report

Even before the year is up, you must compile a complete report of your activities for inclusion in the Office of NIH History Annual Report. Your report is due by November 1 of the year your Fellowship concludes. This report should be simple to compile using your accumulated monthly reports. Refer to a copy of the previous year's Annual Report for the format to follow.

2. Stetten Lecture

Each Fellow is given an opportunity to present an NIH-wide lecture on his or her research project for the year.  Some Fellows choose to present a historical talk of about 30 minutes and ask a scientist with whom they have worked to present a "state-of-the-art" talk on the same material, for about 20 additionalminutes.  Other Fellows present the entire lecture, about 45-50 minutes, themselves.

Appropriate visual aids and handouts will help the NIH-wide audience understand your presentation. For an interesting discussion, see this paper from the Society for the History of Technology .

The NIH Center for Information Technology (CIT) offers free training in effective use of PowerPoint in its Personal Computers section.

The Archivist will create a DVD of your lecture. Photos will be put on CD-ROM and printed proof sheets. Review the proof sheets; select photos, order and distribute copies according to the Stetten Lecture Photo Procedure (Word document).

3. CD-ROM

Compile all the work done during the Fellowship and burn it on a CD for the collection of the Office of NIH History. Deliver the CD to the Archivist. Materials to include:

  • Papers written
  • Oral histories recorded
  • Correspondence regarding project (including emails)
  • Images stored and labeled
  • Monthly reports
  • Annual report
  • Stetten Lecture materials
  • Anything else relevant to your research

4. E-mail Changeover

After the end of your Fellowship, your NIH e-mail address will only persist for one month. Be sure to circulate your new address to all your contacts before that time, and download any e-mails you need to keep. You should also clear out your voicemail inbox, as those recordings will not be kept indefinitely.

5. Things to Turn In to your AO

  • Keys.
  • NIH ID.
  • Forwarding address and contact information!

6. COBRA Insurance

If you are insured through FAES , you may have the right to continue your health insurance for 18 months after termination of your Fellowship under the U.S. COBRA program . FAES and your AO will assist you with the necessary paperwork.

7. What Next

Fellow Tip : "You need to be thinking about what comes next from the very start of your Fellowship."

Fellow Tip : "Your Institute may agree to let you stay on for another few months, or another office on campus may be interested in having you work there. Make the most of being on campus to look for opportunities, while also applying for jobs elsewhere."

Fellow Tip : "If you want to stay on at NIH, talk to the people you have been working with. If you have been doing good work, there is likely a way to keep you employed. If you are interested in going elsewhere, draw on your contacts, and don't hesitate to use the fact that you were an NIH Fellow -- it can open a lot of doors."
